Haley Herzog
My name is Haley Herzog and I am an inspiring secondary-school educator with specialization in History. I am a Texas native, growing up East of Austin in a little town called Elgin. I have earned my Bachelor's Degree from The University of Texas at Austin with a major in History & a minor in European Studies. I will also have obtained my certification in teaching history for grades 8th-12th by the end of summer 21'. With my experience in the UTeach-Liberal Arts Program, I hope to guide students with the knowledge and analytical skills that is essential in their ability to understand and critically examine the world around them.

TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES
The purpose of teaching social studies in school is to enable students to understand, participate in, and make informed decisions about their world. Social studies content allows young learners to explain relationships with other people, to institutions, and to the environment, and equips them with knowledge and understanding of the past. It provides them the skills needed for productive problem solving and decision making skills, as well as for assessing issues and making thoughtful value judgments. Above all, it integrates these skills and understandings into a framework for responsible citizen participation locally, nationally, and globally. The teaching and learning processes within social studies are uniquely organized to develop these capacities.
WHAT I HOPE TO LEARN
During my time as a preservice teacher, I hope to learn and understand the strategies and tools used from and by experienced teachers that have shown to be successful in their ability to make a lesson impactful on students retention and understanding of content. I also hope to learn how to incorporate other content areas into my classroom so I can facilitate a learning environment that benefits the entire scope of a students academic success. My plan as a future educator is to be able to teach my content area while also incorporating and exercising other uses of academics, such as literacy and writing.
